Recommended for Middle Grades
TIME magazine has named 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg as its Person of the Year for 2019.
- She is the youngest person to be chosen by the magazine for this honour.
- Greta wrote on Twitter, “Wow, this is unbelievable! I share this great honour with everyone in the #FridaysForFuture movement and climate activists everywhere.”
- Last year, she started the Fridays for Future movement, missing school on Fridays to protest against climate change. It has now become a worldwide movement, with climate strike movements happening in many countries including India.
- Since then, Greta has become a strong voice for climate change. She was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize and has also won Amnesty International’s award as well as Sweden’s ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’.
In September this year, she gave a strong speech at the United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit in New York, US. She is currently attending the COP25 (UN climate change summit) in Madrid, Spain.
TIME Person of the Year is an annual issue of the US news magazine TIME that features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that has done the most to influence the events of the year, for better or worse.
