The most awaited Tokyo Olympics 2020 got a grand opening on Friday, 23rd July 2021. The pandemic has pushed it to an odd-numbered year for the first time. It is the first game without spectators since no visitors are allowed in Japan. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished his Japanese counterpart Yoshihide Suga and said that “we look forward to some incredible performances this year by world’s best sportspersons.”

US first lady Jill Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron attended the opening ceremony.

Boxing champion Mary Kom and hockey skipper Manpreet Singh were flag bearers at the Olympic stadium. India had 19 athletes representing the country in the grand opening ceremony.

Covid Cases amongst the athletes 

Approximately 17 Covid cases are reported amongst the athletes and many athletes have to pull out from the game because of positive tests. Yet, with athletes and support staff from around the world, the games are ready to begin.
