Tokyo Olympics: Neeraj Chopra wins India’s first gold

Tokyo Olympics Yesterday, India’s Neeraj Chopra won gold in the javelin throw. This is India’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics as well as India’s first-ever gold medal in athletics. The 23-year-old finished ahead of the Czech Republic duo of Jakub Vadlejch and Vitezslav Vesely.
Chopra’s gold is India’s second individual gold medal in its Olympic history after Abhinav Bindra’s heroics in Beijing 2008. Neeraj Chopra had come into the final as one of the favourites to win a medal.
Wrestler Bajrang Punia also won a bronze at the Tokyo Games on Saturday. Bajrang beat Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov in men’s 65kg freestyle. He is the sixth Indian wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics.
World medal tally
China currently leads the tally at the Tokyo Olympics with 38 gold medals. The US and Japan are second and third respectively. India is at the 47th position with 7 medals.
