Top court of France rules that Uber driver is an employee of the companyWe all might have used Uber services, such as its car rides or UberEats.

Now, France’s top court has passed a judgment related to the company. It has recognised an Uber driver as an employee of the company.

What does this mean?

According to Uber’s business model, the drivers are considered as self-employed contractors.
 	This means that they are not direct employees of the company. As such, the company avoids paying certain taxes and costs, such as paid vacations for the contractors.

Why was Uber sued?

In June 2017, an Uber driver filed a case against Uber because his company account had been deactivated (cancelled).
 	After the case was heard in different courts, it finally was brought to the highest or supreme court of France, the Court of Cassation.

What did the court rule?

According to the court, when connecting to the digital Uber platform, the driver is a subordinate or is under the company. He cannot manage the clients by himself, set prices on his own or choose how to execute his task.
 	Also, Uber only reveals the destination after the driver accepts the ride. If the driver declines many rides, he gets bad ratings and can lose his account.
 	All of these points made the court rule that an Uber driver is an employee of the company and not a self-employed contractor.

There are 150 Uber drivers who have filed other cases against the company. This ruling will favour them.

Also, many other global companies follow a business model similar to Uber. They might have to re-think their business strategy.
