Tourism ministry proposes reduction in e-visa fee for touristsWith an aim to attract more foreign travellers to India, the tourism ministry has proposed to reduce the e-visa fee. It will also offer the options of a short-term as well as long-term tourist e-visa.

Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Patel announced the proposal at the National Conference of Tourism Ministers in Delhi on 20th August.

A short duration e-visa for tourists with one-month validity will cost US$25. However, this will be applicable during the peak tourism season between July and March.
 	The e-visa fee will be lower between April to June (a lean period when many tourists do not come).
 	Additionally, he has proposed that the validity of regular e-visas, which costs US$80, will be increased to 5 years with multiple entries. For a one-year e-visa, tourists may now have to pay US$40.
 	Further, for tourists from Japan, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, the e-visa fee will be even lower. Short duration (30-day) lean period e-visa fee may cost US$10. The proposed cost for other e-visas is US$25.

The Home Ministry has approved this proposal. The Ministry of External Affairs is considering it now and an official announcement will be made once it approves.

In 2018, the government announced plans to increase foreign tourist arrivals to 20 million by 2020. The number was 10 million in 2017.
