Trash in the Sea: Let’s Clean it Up!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Our planet is facing a big problem called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is a large area in the ocean filled with plastic and other types of garbage. This is causing harm to many marine creatures and plants.
Recently, a group of scientists found some interesting things about the creatures living around this area.
Important Details
- Scientists found a lot of plastic garbage in the ocean.
- For instance, they collected 105 pieces of plastic from a big part of the Pacific Ocean where there is a lot of plastic.
- Then, they studied the plastic and found that 98% of it had tiny animals on it.
- Some of these animals normally live near the coast, but they were far away in the ocean on the plastic garbage.
- The scientists also found 46 different kinds of animals on the plastic, and most of them were coastal animals.
- This means that animals that usually live near the coast are now living on floating plastic in the ocean.
- Further, the scientists found out that some species like neopelagic fish and plankton are thriving in the area.
- This is because they can eat the plastic and other garbage.
- However, this is not a good thing because the plastic can harm them too.
- The scientists also found out that plastic chemicals can go into the food chain and harm other animals and even humans.
- This is why it is important to stop throwing plastic into the ocean and recycle as much as we can.
