Two women scientists make history by winning 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Recommended for Chemistry
This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier (of France) and Jennifer A. Doudna (of the US). The prize honours their work on the technology of genome editing.
Important Details
A genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is the molecule that contains the genetic code of organisms. It contains all the information needed to build an entire organism.
Charpentier and Doudna have also made history. This is the first time two women are sharing a Nobel prize in science without a male scientist being included.
Prof Charpentier said she hopes this will provide a positive message specifically for young girls who would like to follow the path of science.
Their discovery is known as Crispr-Cas9 or “genetic scissors”. It is a way of making specific and exact changes to the DNA contained in living cells. This system makes viruses less harmful by “cutting” their DNA.
Their technology has greatly changed basic research. It could also be used to treat cancer as well as inherited illnesses.
We have already read about the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physics. The next prize to be announced on Thursday is the Nobel Prize in Literature.
