In our daily life, we come across many flowers. Some are attractive because of their colours or fragrance while few are famous for their rare appearance.
One such rare flower is the udumbara flower (also called youtan poluo). Let’s find out more about it.
Important details
- The udumbara flower is a tiny white tulip-shaped flower that grows on a white thread-like stem.
- The name udumbara comes from the Sanskrit language. It means ‘auspicious* flower from heaven’.
- These flowers do not have seeds. They do not even need water or soil to grow.
- They can grow on anything – like on cars, shoes, metal objects, plastic, windows etc.
- These flowers stay alive for a long period of time and spread a unique fragrance.
- Buddhists consider the udumbara flower to be auspicious.
- They also believe that it blooms only once every 3,000 years.
- After many years, some udumbara flowers were spotted in South Korea in the year 1997.
- After that, it has been seen throughout China and in many other countries around the world.
