Ujjain’s Mahakal corridor magnum opus in religious tourism!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

The “Mahakal Lok” corridor first phase of the Mahakaleshwar Temple is inaugerated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The temple is located in the city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The goal is to improve the pilgrimage experience and bring more tourists to the area.

Key facts!

  • The first phase of the “Mahakal Lok” corridor is over 900 metres long.
  • The Mahakal Lok runs along the edge of the Rudrasagar Lake.
  • The entrance of the temple offers an aesthetically pleasing vista along the way.
  • At the entrance, two tall gateways called Nandi Dwar and Pinaki Dwar have been built.
  • A colonnade has been built with 108 pillars and sandstones that have been carved in a very detailed way.
  • Most of the craftsmen and painters who worked on the pillars came from the Indian states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Orissa.
  • The main things to see at the Mahakal Lok are the falling fountains and a long wall with more than 50 murals that show stories from the “Shiv Puran.”
  • All along the Mahakal Path, you can find many religious sculptures that show different parts of Lord Shiva’s life.
  • Some of these stories are about how the world was made, how Ganesha was born, and so on.
  • The second phase of building the corridor is going on right now.
  • Both the number of people the temple can hold and its overall size is going to grow.
