Unique Flowers – Hammer Orchid!
Recommended for Foundational Grades
The hammer orchid is found in Western Australia. It has a long thin stem and a heart-shaped leaf.
Fun facts about Hammer Orchid!
- The hammer orchid flowers from August to October.
- It is found in sandy or wet soils along the coasts and swamps.
- The flower looks unusual. It is green and yellow in colour and has a red labellum. A labellum or the lip is a part of an orchid that attracts insects for pollination.
Curious Case of Hammer Orchid and Pollination!
- The reason for the flower’s unusual look is because it gets pollinated by only one insect species – the Thynnid wasp.
- Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the male to the female part of the plant. New seeds are fertilized or produced only after pollination.
- The hammer orchid’s labellum looks like a female Thynnid wasp. The male wasp tries to fly away with the labellum, but of course, it cannot do so. In the process, pollen grains get stuck to their body, which is then transferred to the next plant the wasp sits on!
- The hammer orchid is very rare and is protected as an endangered species.
