Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has become the fastest to reach 12,000 runs in One-day International (ODI) cricket.

He reached 12,000 runs in his 242nd inning. With this, he has broken Sachin Tendulkar’s 17-year-old record. Tendulkar was previously the fastest to reach 12,000 runs, achieving it in 300 innings.

Kohli created the record in the second ODI match that India played against Australia in Canberra, the capital of Australia. The 32-year-old had 11,977 runs before this game.

Virat Kohli is the second-highest scorer for India in ODIs behind Tendulkar. Tendulkar scored 18,426 runs from 463 ODIs. Kohli also holds the record for the fastest batsman (in terms of innings) to reach 10,000 and 11,000 runs in ODIs.

Virat Kohli made his ODI debut in 2008 against Sri Lanka. Since then, over 12 years, he has hit 43 ODI centuries in addition to 59 fifties.

The Indian cricket team is currently on a tour of Australia which will end in January 2021.

The tour started with a 3-match ODI series on 27 November. Australia won the first two matches, winning the series. The third ODI is underway today, with India having scored 302 runs and Australia chasing.

After this, there will also be a 3-match T20 series and a 4-match Test series between the two.
