Volcano erupts in the Caribbean island of St Vincent

What is a volcano?

A volcano is a mountain or opening in the earth’s crust from which hot melted rock, gas, steam, and ash from inside the earth burst out.

Saint (St) Vincent is a volcanic island in the Caribbean Sea. It is the largest island of the country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The island is composed of volcanic mountains, which are partly under the sea. Its largest volcano is La Soufrière. This volcano is active but has been quiet since 1979.

On Friday, the La Soufrière volcano erupted. The eruption has covered the island in ash. The dust has covered roads, houses and is also making it difficult to see.

Around 16,000 people are being moved to safety. Rescue operations are underway to help people who have been affected. Many homes are without water and electricity.

The thick dust has also affected the nearby island of Barbados. Air quality is expected to get worse and people have been urged to stay indoors.

Help from other countries

The neighbouring countries of St Lucia, Antigua and Grenada have all offered to accept people who are escaping from the volcano eruption.
