What would a supernova sound like?

Supernova

If you were in space, you would not be able to hear anything directly, even if someone was shouting in your face. This is because sound travels through the vibration of atoms and molecules in a medium (such as air or water). In space, where there is no air, sound has no way to travel.

So, it makes you wonder, how would any event sound like in space?

NASA scientists have used a method called data sonification to know how “a supernova would sound like” when converted to sound played by Earthly instruments. A supernova is a huge explosion that takes place at the end of a star’s life cycle.

They used the help of NASA’s Chandra X-ray observatory which has been imaging distant galaxies for years.

The image details of three space objects – the crab nebula (a supernova remnant), the Bullet Cluster (two clusters of galaxies slowly colliding with one another), and Supernova 1987A were converted into different types of sounds.
