- Today, we often think of clouds as ‘light and fluffy’ but its original meaning was very different.
- In Old English, ‘cloud’ or ‘clúd‘ meant “mass of rock” or “hill”.
- ‘Clúd‘ seems to have come from an ancient Germanic word meaning “lump” (which came from Latin and Greek).
- The meaning of ‘cloud’ was very different before because people at that time thought that clouds looked like groups of rocks.
- At that time, the word for ‘cloud’ (as we know it now as a light and fluffy mass that brings rain) was ‘wolcen‘.
- ‘Cloud’ in its modern sense eventually replaced ‘wolcen‘.
- The word is not only related to rain but also means many more things.
- It can mean a large body of insects or something that makes the mood gloomy.
