What’s in a word – Ketchup!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Do you like eating burgers and fries? Do you eat them with ketchup?

When you say ‘ketchup’, it means a thick, cold, red sauce made from tomatoes. It is very often eaten with fast food. In fact, you can eat ketchup with anything, if that’s what you like!

Today, ketchup is very popular, especially in America and Britain. However, its origin was very different.

Fun facts about ketchup!

  • The word and sauce ‘ketchup’ comes from the Hokkien Chinese language word, kê-tsiap.
  • Unlike the ‘ketchup’ we use today, this was made from fermented fish around the 17th century. It is believed that traders brought fish sauce from Vietnam to southeastern China.
  • British explorers came across this sauce in Southeast Asia and tried to make it back home to the UK. At that time, they tried using ingredients like mushrooms, walnuts, oysters, or anchovies.
  • Then, around the 1800s, someone came up with the idea to use tomatoes and eventually it became very popular as ‘ketchup’, especially in America.

Today, 650 million bottles of Heinz Ketchup are sold in 140 countries worldwide every year – that’s 1,000 bottles every minute.

Here is a video on how it is made:
