Nice – What’s in a word!When you say someone or something is "nice", it usually means the person or thing is good and pleasant. We all like having nice clothes, nice food (to eat) or meeting nice people.

However, the original meaning of the word 'nice' was not very "nice". Let's find out more about it today!

The English word 'nice' is believed to have come from the Old French word nisce in the late 13th century. It could have also come from the Latin word necius.
 	Nisce meant "careless, clumsy, weak, needy, foolish". Even necius meant "ignorant or unaware".
 	So, for a long time, even in English, the word had a negative meaning. It was used for something "foolish or ignorant".
 	But over time, the word slowly became positive. This was because, in English, it was often used to refer to a person who was extremely over-dressed (it was not a compliment).
 	Later, this was confused with a reference to something that is refined or to someone who was “nicely” dressed. So, now we used the word in a positive manner.
