White dwarf stars collide to produce ‘zombie star’

Recommended for Middle Grades

Once upon a time, far, far away in the twinkling night sky, there lived a special kind of star called a white dwarf. It’s like the leftover crumbs of a star’s amazing life story, all packed with surprises and excitement!

Tiny Stellar Marvels: White Dwarfs!

  • When a star gets older and tired, it becomes a white dwarf. Imagine stars like our Sun, but not too big, about eight times smaller, and they decide it’s time to retire. They say goodbye to their hydrogen fuel, which they used to shine brightly, and they become these cute little white dwarfs.
  • But wait, even though they’re small, they are super duper dense! So dense that if you had a teaspoonful of their matter, it would be as heavy as a giant elephant on Earth! That’s pretty silly, right?
  • So, if we ever had a chance to visit a white dwarf, it would be like meeting a tiny but incredibly strong star. Like a pint-sized superhero with an invisible cape, glowing and shining in the vastness of space!
  • Now, here’s an interesting story from May 2019. Some super smart astronomers were looking through their space telescopes, and guess what they saw? A bright, green blob! But don’t worry, it wasn’t some space goo. Nope! It was actually two white dwarfs playing a cosmic game of bumper cars and bumping into each other.
  • The result of this silly collision was extraordinary! It created a never-before-seen kind of star. This star didn’t have any hydrogen or helium left, so it was like a star without its favorite snacks. It’s what we call “dead” but, just like a funny zombie, it kept on glowing super duper bright, like tens of thousands of times brighter than our own Sun!
  • And guess what? This special star was mostly made of neon gas, like those cool signs you see in the city. How awesome is that? But don’t worry, it won’t be showing off its neon lights forever. In about 10,000 years, it’s going to have a little collapse party, but that’s still a long time away, so we don’t need to worry about it now.
  • So, there you have it, the tale of the white dwarf stars! They may be small, they may be dense, and they might even collide and create new stars, but one thing’s for sure – they bring so much joy and wonder to our universe!
  • Keep exploring the stars and dreaming big, little astronomer! The cosmos is full of surprises waiting for you to discover!
