White-tailed eagle flies in England for the first time in 240 yearsWhite-tailed eagles are one of the largest eagle species in the world. While it is found across Europe and Asia, excessive hunting has made it an endangered species.

In England, the sight of a white-tailed eagle in North Yorkshire recently has recently caused a lot of excitement. Why? This is its first sighting in the country in 240 years!

Also known as sea eagles,  the white-tailed eagle had become extinct in England in the early 20th century due to illegal hunting.
 	However, two organisations - Forestry England, and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation, started a project to revive the white tailed-eagle population.
 	They initially released 6 young eagles in the country in August 2019 and they plan to eventually introduce 60 birds in 5 years.

The project is tracking the young birds. They also encourage people to report if they spot the eagles. This will help them know where the eagles are travelling.

What are some features of white-tailed eagles?

They have a pale head with a yellow bill. They usually live most of the year near large bodies of open water.
 	Their wingspan can reach up to 8 feet (that's as long as the tallest man alive).
