WHO officially classifies COVID-19 a ‘pandemic’

WHO officially classifies COVID-19 a ‘pandemic’On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the COVID-19 outbreak as a 'pandemic'. This is the first-ever pandemic caused by a coronavirus.

However, WHO says this is the first-ever pandemic that can still be controlled and urged countries to take action now.

What is a pandemic?

A pandemic is a disease epidemic that has spread across a large region; for example, multiple continents, or worldwide.
 	WHO says, calling COVID-19 a pandemic does not mean that it has become more deadly; it just indicates that it has now spread worldwide.

What is the latest development on COVID-19?

The virus has infected over 120,000 people in 114 countries. India has reported 73 cases till now.
 	Italy has shut all stores except for pharmacies and food shops. It is the second-most affected country after China.
 	The US has halted all travel from Europe to the US.

India's latest travel advisory

The central govt announced that all existing visas, except diplomatic, official, UN/International Organisations, employment, project visas, stand suspended till 15 April.
 	All Indian citizens travelling back to India from or having visited China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, France, Spain and Germany on or after 15 February have to be in quarantine for 14 days minimum.

However, more than 66,000 people have also recovered from COVID-19 around the world.
