World news update – 1 February 2021

Military takeover in Myanmar

The army has enacted a coup in Myanmar. A coup is when the army of a country forcefully takes over its own government. A one-year emergency has been declared in Myanmar. Democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of her governing party have been arrested.

The coup has come after a huge win by Suu Kyi’s party in the national election last November. The army had objected to the win saying that there was election fraud.

Protests in Russia

Russia saw huge protests by the public against the arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Despite government warnings, thousands of people came out in the streets of cities to protest.

Police detained (arrested) more than 4,400 people across Russia, including Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of Alexei Navalny. Police also blocked off the centre of the capital, Moscow on Sunday.

WHO team in China to investigate the origins of the COVID-19 virus

Experts from the WHO (World Health Organization) visited the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan, China. This is where one of the first reported clusters of infections emerged over a year ago. The market has been closed since January 2020.

World day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Pope Francis has announced that the fourth Sunday of July each year will be celebrated as “World day for Grandparents and the Elderly” by all Catholics around the world.

The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church – the world’s largest Christian church. He is also the head of the Vatican (the world’s smallest country).
