World news update – 22 January 2021

Google could withdraw its search services in Australia if a new law is passed.

Australia is introducing a new law (the first of its kind in the world) to make Google, Facebook and other similar companies pay media outlets for their news content. However, if Australia goes through with this, Google said that it will take away its search tool in Australia.

The United States rejoins the World Health Organization (WHO)

The new US President Joe Biden has reversed former President Trump’s orders to withdraw the US from the WHO. The withdrawal had happened last year. President Biden has also signed an order to have the US rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement which the US had officially left in 2020.

Google’s Loon project is being shut down

Google’s parent company Alphabet is shutting down Loon. The project used giant balloons to beam internet to people in remote areas around the world.

Loon helped connect many people during natural disasters. For example, in 2017, it helped bring internet to tens of thousands of people in Peru after massive flooding. However, the company felt the project was too expensive. Read more about Loon here.

Elon Musk announces $100 million prize for new technology

The owner of carmaker Tesla announced on Twitter that this prize will be for the development of the “best” technology to capture carbon dioxide emissions. He said he would announce details next week.
