World White Cane Safety Day!
Recommended for Foundational Grades
World White Cane Day takes place each 15 October every year. We observe this day to recognize the movement of blind people from dependency to full participation in society.
Important Details
- It celebrates the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. It also celebrates and spreads awareness about the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.
- A white cane is a device, a type of stick, used by many people who are blind or visually impaired. White canes can be either collapsible or straight and are of different types.
What does the white cane represent?
- The white cane has become a symbol of freedom, independence, and confidence.
- The use of such a cane enables a blind person to move about freely in his/her environment.
- If an individual knows how to use a cane, he/she can accomplish his/her daily tasks with ease.
- As it is easily visible, it also keeps a blind person safe as other people can notice them easily.
