World’s fastest drummer is one-limbed with ‘robotic arm’

Recommended for Middle Grades

This is a real story of pure inspiration of the world’s fastest drummer.

Years ago, a drummer named Jason Barnes lost one of his arms in an accident. When the accident happened, Jason didn’t get discouraged by it. Instead, he worked on creating a prosthetic to fit on his amputated (cut) arm to help him play the drums.

His story reached Gil Weinberg, a music composer and professor at the Tech’s School of Music in Georgia, US. Weinberg develops artificial creativity for robotics and robot musicians. He also creates artificial limbs for humans.

Weinberg gave Barnes a bionic drumming arm that allowed him to play 2,400 drum hits in a minute (a world record). Bionic means having an artificial, technologically-advanced, body part or parts.

Not only that, Weinberg and his team also began a program to develop a robotic prosthetic Jason could control with his mind.

Thanks to technology, today, Jason is known as the “Bionic Drummer”. Not only that, he has become the “world’s fastest drummer”. He holds a Guinness World Record for most drumbeats in one minute using a drumstick prosthetic (artificial limb).

The technology is still new and being developed. But Jason is very happy and excited about it. He hopes that he can help Weinberg and his team develop this technology for other people like him.

We hope this true story of the world’s fastest drummer has inspired you!
