Kumbh Mela is one of the largest Hindu pilgrimage (celebrated as a festival), in which people gather to bathe in sacred rivers of India, which is believed to cleanse the sins of people and give salvation from cycles of life and death.
 	Kumbh Mela happens every 3 years in either of the following cities.

Prayagraj (Sangam ghat) in Uttar Pradesh
 	Haridwar (river Ganges) in Uttar Pradesh
 	Nasik (river Godavari) in Maharashtra
 	Ujjain (river Kshipra) in Madhya Pradesh

Mahakumbh Mela always happens in Prayagraj, which is place where River Ganga, Yamuna and invisible (mythological) river Saraswati merge. This is called Sangam ghat.
 	The Mahakumbh happens every 144 years (after 12 Purna Kumbh melas).
 	Kumbh Mela is the 14th intangible cultural heritage from India in UNESCO’s list.

Ardh Kumbh Mela of Prayagraj 2019

An 8-week festival, Ardh Kumbh Mela will be kicked-off in Prayagraj on 14th/ 15th January (Makar Sakranti) till 04th March 2019 (Maha Shivratri)
 	It is estimated that between 100-150 million people from India and abroad will attend the festival and take bath at Sangam
 	The lowest temperature in region falls below 10 degrees in January.
 	Organisers are making arrangements, which include more than 500 mass kitchens, 100,000 portable toilets, mass tents.
 	Government will also deploy additional police to keep the law and order situation under control.
