Yannick Bestaven wins round-the-world Vendee Globe sailing race

What is the Vendee Globe?

The Vendee Globe is a solo non-stop round the world sailing race. It takes place once every four years. The Vendee Globe is considered to be the ultimate test in ocean racing and survival.

This year, French sailor Yannick Bestaven has been declared the winner of the race. He completed the race in 80 days, 13 hours, 59 minutes and 46 seconds.

Actually, he was the third person to finish the race. However, he had gotten late because he was helping to rescue a fellow contestant named Kevin Escoffier, who got into an accident.

Taking into account Yannick’s good deed, the judges awarded an extra 10 hours and 15 minutes, which puts him in the first place.

This year’s Vendee Globe sailing race had 33 competitors and some are still yet to reach the finishing line. The race starts and finishes in Les Sables-d’Olonne, in the Département of Vendée, in France. It covers about 24,000 nautical miles (44,000 km) and runs from November to February.
