Zero shadow day: Bengaluru’s unique celestial event!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
On April 25th, the city of Bengaluru experienced a very special event called Zero Shadow Day. It’s a day when tall objects don’t cast any shadows due to the sun being directly overhead.
This happens twice a year in places close to the equator like Bengaluru, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The next Zero Shadow Day in Bengaluru will be on August 18th.
Important Details
- The Indian Institute of Astrophysics organized events at its Koramangala campus to celebrate this unique phenomenon.
- People came together to commemorate the day and learn about the science behind it.
- The reason why Zero Shadow Day happens is because of the Earth’s axial tilt.
- This tilt causes the angle at which the sun’s rays strike the Earth’s surface to change throughout the year.
- During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun is almost directly overhead at the equator.
- As a result this causes no perpendicular shadows to be cast.
- It’s not just Bengaluru that experiences Zero Shadow Day. This phenomenon happens in various parts of the world and is a natural occurrence that scientists have been studying for many years.
- It’s a great opportunity to learn about astronomy and science education, and to appreciate the wonders of our planet and solar system.
