Nirali Dagli, Calorx Public School, Ahmedabad: Reimagining Future

Ms. Nirali Dagli, Principal, Calorx Public School, Ahmedabad joins Curious Times to celebrate Teachers Day and shares her views on Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining Future! She is an eminent Leader and Educationist and has been inspiring students and future generation of teachers.

Curious Times, the leading school newspaper and children’s website is pleased to bring perspectives of Senior Educationists and teachers to our readers on Teachers Day 2022. Over the past 3 years a lot has changed in the education sector, teaching methods, curricula, use of technology, introduction of NEP 2020, emphasis on mental wellbeing of children and how schools shape careers of next the generation. We believe that the energy and enthusiasm of the leaders to adapt to these changes will help not just leading through the crisis of learning gaps but also reimagining the future of education.

Here is our conversation with Ms. Nirali Dagli, Calorx Public School, Ahmedabad:

Curious Times: Technology has brought about a shift in the teaching and learning ecosystem. As you reimagine future, what, in your opinion, would be the role of technology and what would be the role of teachers?

Ms. Nirali Dagli: Teachers and technology has to go hand in hand. There is ocean of information available for students at a click through technology. Teachers are no more just information givers. Teachers will have to equip themselves well to be able to guide and mentor the students to pick the authentic ones and utilize the technology for positive outcomes. Teachers will play a pivotal role through technology in hybrid teaching culture.

Curious Times: NEP 2020 puts a lot of emphasis on skilling and co-curricular activities. How will this have a positive impact on learning outcomes in the future?

Ms. Nirali Dagli: Why do we want to call some activities as co-curricular? They are co-scholastic activities as every activity that students go through in school is a base of new learning. In today’s competitive world we want our students to be street smart and presentable. Skill education is the only way students will be able to apply their knowledge in practical world. Emphasis on skill education and activity-based learning will help to overcome the gap between the school education and vocational needs. This is going to be one most important positive impact of NEP.

Curious Times: What role can schools play in making students reach their potential careers?

Ms. Nirali Dagli: Schools need to create awareness among students from very young age about new age careers and various career options available for each stream. Career talks, industry expert talks should be part of regular curriculum for students so as to empower them to take informed decisions while choosing their careers.

Curious Times: The pressures in the 21st century are different from earlier times. What will be the role of schools and teachers in mental wellbeing of students going forward?

Ms. Nirali Dagli: Positive well-being of the students is important along with mentally happy teachers. Positive school culture is extremely important to manage the processes and methodology of school. In such culture, neither the staff members nor the students feel stressed. Happy teachers make happy students. Happy classrooms are way forward to students’ well-being. Positive engagement of students in various activities as per their competencies helps students manage their mental well-being.

Curious Times: As you reimagine the future, how can schools become inclusive and accommodate students from all ethnicities or with different abilities?

Ms. Nirali Dagli: We are already in the era of inclusive education.

Curious Times: Schools prepare children for higher education. Should competitive exams have a different curriculum than schools?
Coaching classes and ed-tech companies have been supplementing the school education. What do you think should be their role?

Ms. Nirali Dagli: Schools are not only for educational skill development, but they are social institutions also. Competitive exams and school curriculum if are matched well, the undue pressure on students to prepare separately for these exams can be avoided. Students may not need any other external supplementing classes. Schools will also get their due share in preparing the children for higher education.

School education should be a happy ride for students rather than roller coaster.
