NASA’s Artemis 1 launch succeeds!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

NASA sends out Artemis I, its most powerful rocket. The rocket for the Space Launch System is almost 32 stories tall. It was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, which is part of NASA.

There were technical problems with the launch and two hurricanes right after each other. In addition, the spacecraft had to be moved out of its loading bay and to the launch pad twice. On the third try, the rocket finally got off the ground.

The rocket ship won’t need a crew to go around the moon and back.

Its goal is to send astronauts back to the surface of the moon this decade. So as to build a permanent base there so that future trips to Mars can start from there.

The launch is a big step because the last mission to the moon was almost 50 years ago.

Key facts!

  • The primary objective of the first Artemis mission is to conduct a rigorous demonstration flight for the Space Launch Vehicle (SLS)-Orion vehicle.
  • The Space Launch Vehicle (SLS) is the most powerful and complicated rocket in the world.
  • It is the largest new vertical launch system that NASA has created.
  • The Artemis programme will last for 25 days.
  • It intends to drop CubeSats on the moon’s surface.
  • This is for scientific research
  • And then continue to fly nearly 60,000 kilometres beyond the moon and finally return to Earth.
  • On December 11, the capsule is scheduled to be submerged in water after its mission.
  • This trip will test the limits of the vehicle’s design in order to demonstrate that it is safe and reliable enough to carry astronauts.
  • In the event that the mission is successful, a crewed Artemis II voyage around the moon and back might occur as early as 2024.
