China takes the lead in ocean mapping!

Recommended for Middle Grades

China aims to distinguish itself in the scientific world through ocean mapping!

According to experts,  only a small part of the ocean has been well explored. And the ocean covers more than 70% of the surface of our planet. As a result, we still have a lot to learn about what’s under the ocean.

The first step in exploring our ocean is to map the seafloor.

What is Bathymetry?

Bathymetry is the study of how deep the ocean floor is under water.

Key facts!

  • There is tremendous global interest in the deep-sea exploration of mineral resources.
  • Firstly, experts believe that our ocean floor has yet undiscovered deposits of copper, gold, minerals, and rare earth elements.
  • Secondly, the discovery of such riches could lead to unlocking the potential of immense commercial riches.
  • The Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering (IDSSE) in China is dedicated to mapping the least explored parts of the world’s oceans
  • Explorer 2, a green and white craft carries with it one of the most advanced deep-sea watercraft.
  • As well as China’s ambitions to dominate the highly competitive field of deep-sea exploration.
  • In 2020, when the submersible “Striver” descended to a record depth of more than 10,000 metres it received quite a lot of praise from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
  • More importantly, the President stated that the achievement marked China’s ability to enter the world’s deepest oceans to carry out scientific exploration and research
  • Now, researchers working at the IDSSE have stated that their primary goal is to figure out what is located at the bottom of ocean trenches that are little understood.
    • For example, how are organisms able to adapt to existence in the harsh conditions of the ocean?
    • Also, how could ocean areas be used for their resources without causing harm to those environments?
