The month of April is known as National Poetry Writing Month or NaPoWriMo. As we celebrate NaPoWriMo, let’s celebrate a poet each day, and understand their way of writing poetry.

Denis Devlin was an Irish poet who lived from 1908 to 1959. He attended the University College Dublin, as he was born in Dublin, Ireland. Devlin is known for his poetry which is both lyrical and experimental.

Legacy of Denis Devlin

Devlin’s poetry often explored themes of love, loss, and the human condition. He was also interested in the visual arts and collaborated with artists on several projects. In addition to his poetry, Devlin was a diplomat. He served as the Irish ambassador to Italy and the United States.

One of his most famous poems is called “Lament for the Death of Thomas MacDonagh.” It is a tribute to a friend of Devlin’s who was executed for his involvement in the Easter Rising of 1916. Devlin’s poetry is known for its use of imagery and metaphor. It creates vivid and powerful images in the reader’s mind.

Despite his success as a poet, Devlin also had a successful career as a diplomat and served as the Irish ambassador to Italy and the United States.

Devlin’s poetry continues to be read and admired today. Importantly, he is remembered as one of Ireland’s most important poets of the 20th century.
