Jurassic Park Comes to Life!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hold on to your hats, curious readers! There’s a new discovery in the world of dinosaurs that is shaking things up! Move over, T-Rex, because the dinosaur “Utahraptor” has entered the scene!

That’s right, scientists have found the remains of an ancestor of the legendary velociraptors, but this one is much larger and older!

They’re calling it the largest dinosaur ever found, and it’s got everyone in the scientific community absolutely amazed. These fossils were discovered in a remote region of Utah, in an area called Utahraptor Ridge. This is where some of the most well-preserved and fascinating dinosaur fossils have been found.

Important Details

  • So, what exactly is the Utahraptor? Well, it’s a member of the dromaeosaurid genus that lived in North America during the Lower Cretaceous period. Check this out! The scientists used a fancy technique called uranium-lead dating in zircon crystals found in fossils. On top of that, they looked for changes in the amount of two different types of carbon found in buried organic matter. All this helped them figure out that these fossils are at least 135 million years old!
  • That’s right, this ancient creature has been around for a long, long time. But wait, there’s more! This discovery is breaking records! Jim Kirkland, who first identified this species in 1993, has stated that before this discovery, there was a gap of 25 million years in the record.
  • That’s a big chunk of time, people! And now, with the discovery of the Utahraptor, we have a better understanding of what happened during that time period.
  • It just goes to show that there’s always more to discover and learn about in the world of science, especially when it comes to dinosaurs. Who knows what other incredible discoveries are waiting to be made?
