4 new women judges in Supreme Court after historic oath
Recommended for Gender
We read about the Supreme Court recommending 9 new judges for appointments. The centre accepted all the recommendations.
Important Details
- And so, on 1 September, nine new judges were sworn in as Supreme Court judges. Out of the 9, three are women. This brings the total number of sitting judges up to 33.
- This also means that currently, there are now four women Supreme Court judges. They are Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice B V Nagarathna, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela M Trivedi. This is the highest number of sitting women judges that India’s top court has ever had.
- Moreover, another important fact is that one of the new women Justices is set to become India’s first-ever woman Chief Justice of India (CJI). She is Justice Nagarathna and she is in line to be the CJI in September 2027. She is also the daughter of a former Chief Justice of India, E S Venkataramiah.
- Swearing-in ceremony
- This was also the first time ever that nine judges took the oath of office at one go. The swearing-in ceremony is usually held in the CJI’s courtroom. However, this time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they held the ceremony in the auditorium of the Supreme Court’s additional building complex.
