Mars – Frozen water discovered under a Grand Canyon
Experts have recently discovered a huge supply of frozen water under the Grand Canyon on Mars. Such types of discoveries take enormous amounts of effort and planning. This grand canyon is ten times longer and five times deeper than the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. The planning and effort leading to the discovery have been extremely challenging.
Trace Gas Orbiter
Researchers utilised the space orbiter “Trace Gas Orbiter” to record activities in and around the Grand Canyon. This is a space research activity that is jointly conducted by two large space agencies. The aim of this research is to better understand the constituents of the Mars environment and be on the lookout for any activity.
Exciting Discovery
What makes this discovery exciting is the existence of frozen water (more than expected) is similar to what exists on our Planet Earth. Researches have also found that 40% of the ground on Mars is water. Furthermore, this blanket of ice under the canyon is approximately one metre below the surface, the close distance means that researchers do not have to bring in equipment or drilling machines to drill.
Future on Mars
Such a blanket of ice makes future Mars exploration even more exciting as scientists are eager to study this discovery to search for small frozen life segments or any organic molecules that give us clues to life on Mars.
