International Day of Action for Rivers!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

The 14th of March is recognised as the International Day of Action for Rivers. The day is set aside to honour, celebrate, and raise public awareness of rivers and their significance.

Importance of Water

All living things need water. People use it for everything from the food they eat, to the cotton they wear, to the electricity they use every day. Environments, like lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and groundwater, are home to a lot of the world’s animals and fish.

Despite how important water is to both humans and nature, it is a surprising resource that is hard to get your hands on. Less than 1% of the world’s water is fresh and can be used.

The Importance of the International Rivers Day

The day is important because it makes people think about how rivers help people live. It also talks about how pollution and industrial activities have threatened these water sources in the past.

The International Day of Action for Rivers is meant to make people aware of these problems and how they affect people.

Theme for 2023

Several rivers around the world, especially in developing countries, have become sewage canals or are filled with dangerous pollution from factories. With this in mind, the 26th Anniversary of the International Day of Action for Rivers wants to show how important it is for people to stand up for rivers and be their protectors and voices.
