Anthony Hecht – American Poet
The month of April is known as National Poetry Writing Month or NaPoWriMo. As we celebrate NaPoWriMo, let’s celebrate a poet each day, and understand their way of writing poetry.
Anthony Hecht was an American poet who lived from 1923 to 2004. He was born in New York City. He served in the army during World War II. After the war, he attended Kenyon College. Later became a professor at Bard College. Throughout his life, Hecht wrote many poems that were published in books and magazines.
Legacy of Anthony Hecht
One of Hecht’s most famous poems is called “The Book of Yolek.” This poem tells the story of a young Jewish boy. The boy is sent to a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Hecht’s poem is a powerful reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust. And the importance of remembering those who suffered.
Another notable work of Hecht’s is a poem called “The Dover Bitch.” This poem is a response to a famous poem by Matthew Arnold called “Dover Beach.” Hecht’s poem takes a humorous approach to Arnold’s serious and melancholy poem. The poem has become a favourite among poetry lovers.
