Edgar Allan Poe: American Poet
The month of April is known as National Poetry Writing Month or NaPoWriMo. As we celebrate NaPoWriMo, let’s celebrate a poet each day, and understand their way of writing poetry.
As a major figure in world literature, Edgar Allan Poe is mostly known for his short stories, poems, and critical ideas. Poe has been called the “architect” of the modern short story in literary histories and handbooks. He was also a key figure in the “art for art’s sake” movement in 19th-century European literature.
Early Life of Poe!
Poe was born in 1809, the son of actors. His parents died when he was three years old, so he had to grow up alone. The wealthy exporter from Richmond, Virginia, named John Allan raised him. He never legally adopted him, but he took care of him. Poe went to the best schools that were available when he was a child. He was also accepted to the University of Virginia. He joined the army and wrote his first poetry book, Tamerlane, and Other Poems.
Poe’s first short stories appeared in Philadelphia newspapers in the 1830s. The finest article in the Baltimore Saturday Visitor, “Found in a Bottle,” was awarded a $1,000 prize. Poe made himself known not only as an author of poetry and fiction but also as a literary critic.
Legacy of Poe!
Edgar Allen Poe’s most important contribution to world literature came from the way he looked at things both as a creative author and as a critic. For example, he was very interested in literary formalism because he thought that through careful use of language, one can express, though imperfectly, a vision of truth and what it means to be human.
Poe said that his goal was to write only about art in a time and place where he thought literature was too focused on its practical value. A lot of Edgar Allan Poe’s best and most well-known works have a lot of psychological intensity in them. Poe is also said to have started science fiction and detective story.
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most important people who made modern literature, both in its popular forms, like horror and detective stories, and in its more complex and self-aware forms. His works are still important to any understanding of modern art in world literature, even if you don’t read them.
