Back to life

100 year old banyan tree weighing 100 tonnes in a district of Telangana was brought back to life. The tree was uprooted four months ago due to heavy rains. It was restored on 13 February. It all happened because a tree lover took the initiative. Together with the district authorities and the state government, the tree was brought back to life. The banyan tree stood tall and wide in the agricultural land of two brothers. It had fallen due to heavy rains. The rains destroyed the soil in the fields.

Meet Dr Dobbala Prakash – a tree lover

The tree was uprooted. In the following dry season, the tree suffered due to a lack of nourishment. It appeared dead. A nature lover of the same village, Dr Dobbala Prakash, was upset with the fallen banyan tree. He remembered how the banyan tree would give shade and shelter to animals and humans.

Dr Prakash requested the farmers of nearby fields to supply water. The farmers agreed and supplied water for nearly three months. Thereafter, the banyan tree started to develop new roots and leaves.

A new home

What is translocation of a tree?

An uprooted tree with roots is packed and moved by a crane.

Translocation of the banyan tree was costly. Dr Prakash searched for donors to care for the expenses. The tree had to be lifted and transported to another place. The founder of VATA Foundation along with some of his friends helped in the financial aspect. The tree had to be moved nearly 6 km. The district administration laid a special road for this purpose. In addition, two cranes were used to lift the tree.

The tree was lifted with the help of cranes and was taken to the Collectorate. In addition, two branches from the mother tree were also planted.
