Pune’s Budhwar Peth Vaidya Uphar Gruha opened in 1912. The eatery serves about 1,000 misals on Sundays. The menu last changed in the 1960s.

What is misal?

In the Indian state of Maharashtra, Misal is a very popular spicy dish. For the most part, the Misal is eaten for breakfast, as a snack in the middle of the day, or as a one-dish meal, usually as part of misal pav.

According to historical accounts, it was traditionally cooked in private houses. Other Maharashtrian specialities, such as thalipeeth and dadpe poh, were served at the popular eatery.

Over a period of time, customers have shifted from tangawallahs to younger people. The younger generation is Instagram-friendly now. The loyalty and taste of the dishes from this century-old eatery remain consistent over the years.

Key facts!
