China and Russia to build new lunar space station together

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

China and Russia announced that they will be jointly building a lunar space station.

The leaders of the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and Roscosmos (Russia’s space agency) signed the agreement on 9 March 2021.

They will build it on the surface of the Moon or in orbit or both. Moreover, it will be available for use by all countries. This international scientific lunar station will help scientists research in different areas.

What next?

The two countries will now work together to design, develop, and operate the station. They also plan to cooperate on China’s Chang’e-7 and Russia’s Luna 27 missions. These missions aim to study the Moon’s south pole.

This agreement has come as Russia prepares to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its first-ever manned space flight in 1961.

Russia was a founding partner of the International Space Station (ISS). They built the ISS together with the United States and other nations.
