China declares ‘complete victory’ in eradicating extreme poverty in China

Chinese President Xi Jinping made this declaration at a gathering held in the capital, Beijing. With this, China has achieved the United Nations goal of poverty eradication (removal) 10 years ahead of the 2030 deadline.

Extreme poverty in China means people who live on US$2.30 (around ₹270) or less per day.

Hyundai is recalling 82,000 of its electric cars

South Korean carmaker Hyundai is recalling these cars to replace their batteries. This is after 15 reports of fires have emerged, involving the vehicles.

It is set to be one of the most expensive car recalls in history. It could cost Hyundai up to US$900 million. Each car’s battery replacement will cost about US$11,000 (about ₹8 lakh).

Parts of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest are being illegally sold on Facebook

The BBC has found that such plots are up for sale on Facebook Marketplace. These include land that is part of national parks. Many of the sellers openly admit they do not have a land title that shows a legal right. Deforestation is a huge issue in Brazil and such illegal sales are making things worse.

COVID-19 update

More than 2.5 million people (25 lakhs) worldwide have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began in December 2019. Almost half of the deaths have occurred in just five countries: the US, Brazil, Mexico, India and Britain.
