Yesterday, on the occasion of Bhai Dooj, the Delhi government started its scheme of free rides on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses for all women.

• As per the new scheme, DTC bus conductors will distribute pink tickets having a value of ₹10 to women passengers on buses for free travel. Then, the government will pay for the number of tickets distributed.
• This scheme applies to around 3,700 DTC buses as well as 1,800 cluster buses under the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).
• It also applies to Noida-NCR (National Capital Region) bus services as well as airport and other special buses under DTC and DIMTS.
• Women employees of the Delhi government can also avail of this scheme. However, if they use this scheme, they have to give up their transport allowance.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “Now, girls and women who had to drop out of schools and colleges because of high transportation cost don’t need to sacrifice their education. They can now take buses to good schools and colleges which are away from their homes.”

TC and DIMTS will be stricter with ticket checking to prevent “misuse” and “pilferage” (stealing) of the single journey passes, officials said.

The Delhi government also plans to implement a similar scheme in the Delhi metro but that is still to be finalised.
