Have you ever tried Dango? Dango is a popular Japanese sweet rice dumpling eaten all year round. You can make it home and also buy it in markets and the streets.

Important Details

  • It is made from rice flour. Dango is often served with green tea and is available in numerous varieties.
  • Three to five Dango are served on a skewer (bamboo stick).
  • What are some Dango varieties?
    • Anko Dango is commonly made with red bean paste
    • Chadango is green-tea flavoured Dango
    • Mitarashi Dango is covered with syrup made from soya sauce, sugar and starch.
  • It is believed that the first Dango was made at a tea house called Kamo Mitarashi in Kyoto, Japan.
  • In the olden days, Dangos were made with leftover pieces of rice and grain husks, just to make sure that no food is wasted.
  • Dango can also be made of barley, wheat, corn, beans, sweet potato and chestnuts.
