In the lush, green hills of Garhwal, Binya, a young girl full of dreams, lived a modest life with her mother and brother, Bijju. One bright and sunny day, while shepherding her cows back home, a chance encounter transformed her day into an adventure.
She stumbled upon a group of city folks, reveling in a merry picnic. Among their array of dazzling belongings, a blue frilly umbrella caught Binya’s eye. It shimmered under the sun like a piece of the sky, enchanting and beautiful.
Binya, with eyes wide with wonder and heart filled with longing, couldn’t help but wish to be a part of that elegant city life.

A Trade of Treasures
As destiny would have it, the city folks noticed Binya too. They found themselves captivated by her innocent beauty and the unique pendant she wore—a leopard’s claw, a cherished talisman in the hills. In a moment of serendipity, Binya and the city dwellers decided to exchange their prized possessions.
Binya traded her lucky leopard’s claw pendant for the captivating blue umbrella.
This exchange was more than just a simple trade; it was a magical moment where dreams intertwined, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Binya’s life.
The Umbrella’s Charm
With the blue umbrella now in her possession, Binya felt like a princess from a fairy tale. She paraded through the village, the umbrella always by her side, unfurled and proudly on display. Its charm was undeniable.
It soon became the talk of the village, with children and adults alike admiring it with wide-eyed wonder. The umbrella was not just an object; it was a beacon of joy, spreading smiles and wonder wherever
Binya went. It was simple yet magical, a testament to the joy that little things in life can bring.
Envy and Mistakes
In the heart of the village, Ram Bharosa ran a small, quaint shop. It was a place of laughter and chatter, where he sold sweets, snacks, and everyday necessities. Despite his humble store, Ram Bharosa took pride in his work.
But one day, something changed. The arrival of Binya’s blue umbrella stirred a deep envy within him. It wasn’t just any umbrella; it was a symbol of beauty and status that he desperately wanted. He watched from his shop window as the umbrella passed by, his heart growing heavier with longing. He imagined himself holding it, feeling its magic.
Driven by this desire, he approached Binya with an offer to buy the umbrella, offering her more money than he could afford. But Binya, attached to her prized possession, firmly declined. Ram Bharosa’s heart sank, but his longing turned into an obsession.
A Plan Gone Wrong
Unable to let go of his desire, Ram Bharosa devised a plan. He recruited a young boy from the neighboring village, promising him rewards in exchange for his help. The boy, unaware of the consequences, agreed to help the shopkeeper.
One day, seizing the opportunity, the boy stealthily followed Binya into the jungle. As she busied herself collecting porcupine quills, he quietly slipped the umbrella away. Triumphantly, he returned to Ram Bharosa with the stolen prize.
But their victory was short-lived. Bijju, Binya’s protective brother, was on their trail. With a keen sense of justice, Bijju confronted the boy, who, under pressure, revealed Ram Bharosa’s involvement. The news spread like wildfire, turning the villagers’ shock into anger.
The Cost of Envy
The consequences of Ram Bharosa’s actions were immediate and harsh. The villagers, who once greeted him warmly, now looked upon him with disdain. They boycotted his shop, leaving him to face lonely days and silent nights. His store, once filled with the joyful noise of the village, stood quiet and deserted.
Ram Bharosa’s heart filled with regret. He realized that his envy had not only cost him the village’s trust but also his livelihood. The umbrella he had longed for had brought nothing but misery.
This bitter experience taught him a valuable lesson: that envy can blind us to what truly matters and lead us down a path of loss and regret.
