Fossils of oldest-known titanosaur dinosaurs found in Argentina

What are titanosaurs?

Titanosaurs were a group of long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs that walked on four pillar-like legs. Some of the largest land animals in Earth’s history belonged to this group.

Recently, scientists discovered fossils of what may be the oldest-known titanosaur.

The fossils belong to a titanosaur species named Ninjatitan zapatai. They lived 140 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. The fossils were discovered in Argentina’s Patagonia region.

At a length of about 65 feet (20 metres), the oldest-known titanosaur, Ninjatitan was a large dinosaur. But it was much smaller than later titanosaurs such as Argentinosaurus.

Argentinosaurus was one of the largest land animals ever to walk the planet. It reached a length of around 115 feet (35 metres).

What else does the discovery reveal?

The researchers said this oldest-known titanosaur discovery shows that the titanosaurs as a group seem to be older than previously known. Moreover, it also supports the idea that titanosaurs originated in the Southern Hemisphere.
