Indian farmers use the sun to help water their crops

Recommended for Middle Grades

Water shortage in recent years has badly affected agriculture in India.

Farmers end up relying on expensive and polluting diesel pumps to dig groundwater for irrigation.

  • A company called Khethworks is trying to fix the problem by using solar energy.
  • Khethworks has developed a solar-powered irrigation system. It allows farmers to water their crops without depending on seasonal rains or expensive fuel.
  • It started as a project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US and was registered as a company in Pune in 2016.

India gets about 300 days of sun in a year and solar power is plentiful. Solar energy production has increased immensely in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been encouraging the move into renewable energy.
