India’s first voter passes away at the age of 105!

Shyam Saran Negi was the first voter to cast a ballot in India’s first general election following independence from British rule.

The 105-year-old had voted in the Himachal Pradesh state assembly elections just three days before he died.

  • Shyam Saran Negi may have been the first person to vote in India’s first general election after the country gained its independence from British rule.
  • Since then, Mr Negi has taken part in all of the elections.
  • He voted in the Himachal Pradesh state assembly elections just three days before he passed away on Saturday.
  • Reports say that this was the first time Mr Negi hasn’t gone to the polls in person because of his health.  Instead, he has mailed in his vote.
  • In 2014, the Electoral Commission gave Mr Negi the job of brand ambassador as part of a plan to get more people to vote.
  • He also appeared in a Google video that urged people to cast their ballots in the general election that same year.
  • Mr Negi was quoted as saying that voting in elections is not only our right but also our duty. 
  • In addition, Mr Narendra Modi spoke fondly about Mr Neg while he was at an election rally.
