Meerkats behave better when zoo visitors are around

Have you ever behaved nicer to your siblings when you have guests at home? It turns out, meerkats also behave in a similar way in zoos.

What are meerkats?

Meerkats are small mongooses, found in southern Africa. They are famous for standing upright, being always alert for danger.

Meerkats also live in many zoos across the world. Due to COVID-19, zoos did not get visitors for a very long time. But since then, they have started opening up and scientists have found that meerkats behaved nicer with each other after visitors started showing up!

Scientists feel that this kind of nicer behaviour shows that the meerkats missed human visitors.

It is not only meerkats. Throughout the lockdowns, we also read about other animals who felt the absence of human visitors. For example, dolphins.

Sometimes they work in teams but some prefer to be alone. But if we look carefully there is so much we can learn from them too! Can you think of some of the qualities that you love about animals?
