NASA sends out Artemis I, its most powerful rocket. The rocket for the Space Launch System is almost 32 stories tall. It was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, which is part of NASA.

There were technical problems with the launch and two hurricanes right after each other. In addition, the spacecraft had to be moved out of its loading bay and to the launch pad twice. On the third try, the rocket finally got off the ground.

The rocket ship won’t need a crew to go around the moon and back.

Its goal is to send astronauts back to the surface of the moon this decade. So as to build a permanent base there so that future trips to Mars can start from there.

The launch is a big step because the last mission to the moon was almost 50 years ago.

• In the event that the mission is successful, a crewed Artemis II voyage around the moon and back might occur as early as 2024.
