Perseverance rover’s successes

NASA’s Perseverance rover landed in Mars’ Jezero Crater on 18 February 2021. And in its time there,  it has done many great things.

At the moment, Mars and the Earth are on opposite sides of the Sun, and we cannot communicate with Mars at the moment. So, NASA scientists on Earth are taking their first break since the Perseverance mission started.

So, what are NASA’s updates on the Perseverance rover’s successes till now?

Till now, Perseverance has achieved many things. But out of them, scientists at NASA are the most excited about 3 major milestones (achievements).

One is, collecting the first rock core samples. The rock samples that Perseverance has collected will be brought home to Earth by NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission. This mission is currently in development.

The second is flying the Ingenuity helicopter. The Ingenuity helicopter has also now flown 13 times and has captured many photos of the ground. It is travelling ahead of Perseverance as a guide of sorts.

The third is publishing the first scientific results about the Jezero Crater delta. After studying the images that Perseverance sent, NASA was able to reconstruct a geological story of Mars from billions of years ago. It showed that for a long time (maybe millions of years), a river flowed into a lake that filled Jezero Crater. It finally confirmed that there was a lake in Jezero Crater millions of years ago.

We will continue to read about more of Perseverance rover’s successes as time goes on.
