Today is National Education Day. We celebrate this day every year, on the birth anniversary of Maulana Azad – independent India’s first Minister of Education.
This day has been celebrated every year since 2008.

- We celebrate this day to spread awareness about the importance of education.
- In addition to commemorating Maulana Azad’s contribution to education in the country.
- On this day, educational institutions in the country organise seminars, workshops, and literary competitions to discuss the importance of literacy.
- Maulana Azad (Abul Kalam Azad) was a freedom fighter.
- He was also a great believer in the importance of education.
- He advocated for the education of women, universal primary education, and compulsory education for all children up to the age of 14.
- During his tenure, Maulana Azad established the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Akademi and more.
- He also established the first IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), IISc (Indian Institute of Science), School of Planning and Architecture and the University Grants Commission.
- Maulana Azad was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992 for his contribution to education and the freedom movement.
- Many national educational institutions are also named in his honour.
